To be set up under the National Rural Health Mission, these clinics will provide services covering every aspect of adolescent health and well–being

Assam will set up 24 adolescents’ clinics in the district hospitals, under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), to offer medical counselling and treatment to the teenagers in the state.

The centre recently gave nod to set up the clinics which aims at providing services covering every aspect of adolescent behaviour and health, including growth and development.

At present there are 38 such clinics in the state but they function only once in a week on Friday. The new 24 clinics will function seven–days a week.

The facilities in the adolescent clinics will include general check–up and psychiatric evaluation of the teenagers to solve the sex–related problem they face.

"Teenagers go through significant physical and psychological development during this age and this creates confusion in their minds. As many are unable to share their problem with their parents, the new clinics will help them to get proper counselling and at the same time take preventive measures to avoid sex–related diseases," an NRHM official here said.

The NRHM will also recruit additional 24 counsellors for integrated counselling and testing centres for the adolescents’ clinics.
